M A M Solutions wins an Entrepreneur in Residence grant from The Royal Society

The Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) programme is a scheme offered by The Royal Society awarding grants to individuals from industry to spend 20% of their time working with a university. Martin McMahon has been successful at applying for the EiR grant to work with The Department of Engineering and The Built Environment at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU).

Recognising the difficulties of small and medium sized enterprises in the eastern region to gain knowledge and experience in AM, and the struggles of local universities to engage AM externally or successfully implement AM into their courses, Martin first developed his vision for East Anglia in 2022. His continued outreach to the University of Suffolk, the University of East Anglia, and Anglia Ruskin University over the past two and half years thus gave rise to the EiR opportunity, with ARU agreeing to be the host organisation.

Starting in January 2025, Martin will be helping the university to increase the utilisation of it’s EOS M290, currently the only laser powder bed fusion system installed in the whole of the East Anglia region. A key outcome of this two year project should see the successful formation of a new academic cluster joining the aforementioned universities, and opening up the opportunity to engage with businesses in the East of England region.

Additive Anglia is a concept still in its infancy but with grand aspirations to help each university member of the cluster to provide increased academic outcomes for their students. Part of the two year project will see the creation of skills training in 3D printing, and it is also hoped that this will encourage local industry to carry out research and development using AM.
