I am passionate about additive manufacturing and the never ending possibilities that it can bring to our world, and I will do my utmost to help you find it’s potential.

Martin McMahon

Metal Additive Manufacturing Consultant

I’m Martin McMahon, a leading metal additive manufacturing consultant with close to 30 years working in, and alongside advanced manufacturing. I’m fascinated by what metal 3D printing can do, and I’m here, ready to help you obtain the best solutions from AM.

I started in at the deep end of the sector, at one of the UK’s first commercially successful AM service providers. A really exciting time to get involved, helping to kickstart the use of AM in the medical sector. Thankfully, just before the world became a little ridiculous with hype about 3D printing! This was followed by more trailblazing at the UK’s first metal AM technology provider and machine producer. Whilst finally ending with time spent inside the metal powder supply chain.

  • Unrivalled experience at the spearhead of the UK’s emerging AM sector.
  • Driven by a passion for helping others.

Early Years

A lot of steep learning curves from the outset of my career, eventually leading to global management responsibilities in multi-national organisations. As a bit of an ‘all-rounder’, I’ve worked across several disciplines from Business Administration to Engineering, from Production to Sales & Marketing, and always with a “customer first” approach. Moving into different sectors, I’ve experienced a lot of advanced engineering and broadened my understanding of modern technology. This has included: electron microscopy, forensic science, nano technology, factory automation, inkjet printing, and medical devices.

When this career experience was coupled with my knowledge and understanding of metallurgy, gained from my Degree and subsequent Ph.D in Materials Science & Engineering, that’s when Additive Manufacturing found me.

Leadership

I’ve helped develop teams, processes, and management solutions that have enabled continuous growth and success.

Experience

I come with hands-on, cross-sector experience to offer guidance on the development of AM in almost any industry.

Fortitude

I have the resilience to keep going, and to get the job done; always prioritising my client’s needs.

Additive Manufacturing

It all started with “rapid prototyping”, and to the World it was the end of the first decade of metal AM, in 2009. I was recruited because I had a firm understanding of laser materials processing, was coming from the medical sector, and fortunately I was also a metallurgist. A rare combination indeed!

However, perhaps rarer still is that I’m an Engineer that also likes Product Management (that’s Sales AND marketing, truly combined). Therefore, I was able to step into business development for this disruptive technology like a duck to water. Hence, maximising my luck, and being a part of what was to become a brilliant team, I was able me to establish myself as a trusted authority in metal AM. In just over five years the company I was first with moved mountains and created many metal AM milestones. Teamwork is dreamwork and I feel truly blessed to have been a part of it all!

Early Firsts in Metal AM

  • The UK’s first custom implant part made from Ti6Al4V, qualified to ISO 13 485.
  • First qualified and on the grid structural AM roll hoop to be used in an F1 car.
  • Series production of the first fully approved F1 engine car component in Ti64.
  • A structural antenna bracket in AlSi10Mg, fully qualified by the European Space Agency, and used on a satellite.
  • Supply of first series production approved flight component in CoCr.
  • The first fully qualified production waveguide parts to be used on a commercial satellite.
  • Supplier approval for the first downhole production parts in Ti64 to a Oil & Gas company.
  • First Ministry of Defence flight approved production helicopter component in Ti64 in the UK.
  • Production of first F1 approved turbocharger housings in In-718.
  • The UK’s first flight approved production part in Ti-CP to be used on a jet aircraft.

Machines and Materials

Jumping into the core of the sector, with one of the most notable machine developers, brought me into direct contact with the technology. Here I was able to make an impact on product development, designing in system and AM process improvement. However, my roles spanned applications and materials development, as well as a customer facing metal additive manufacturing consultant. I was involved with on-site problem solving, so I also got to see a lot more of the world. This is also where my involvement with the SAE AMS AM Metals Committee started and specifically working on AM Machine Qualification.

Powder to the people

Closing my sector wide experience was time inside the materials supply chain. Firstly, at a specialist company with a unique alloy product, supplying exclusively to the aerospace sector. Followed by one of the giants in the metal powder supply chain with almost the entire catalogue of available alloys in their portfolio.
